EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
