British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
